CCARS has received permission from the Folkston/Okeefanokee Chamber of Commerce to operate a special event station in recognition of the annual Railwatch Day train-watching celebration. Our plan is to operate CW, SSB and digital on as many bands as propagation allows.
Railwatch Days is an annual event that draws railroad fans from all over the Southeast for a day of shared interests, food, and photography. The historic Folkston Train Depot was rebuilt less that 10 years ago and has been thoughtfully equipped to accomodate rail fans. A museum contaiing many locally historical documents, drawings, and artifacts has been established and is a must see for rail fans. Here is an excerpt from the Folkston CoC website:
"The train watcher’s platform is located on the east side of the Nahunta Sub at MP 602.6 The platform is equipped with a scanner tuned to CSXT’s frequency 160.590 and 160.320...Ceiling fans were installed for those warm days and nights. Lights and electric outlets are available. Flood lights shine on the tracks from each end of the platform for night viewing. A Picnic table and grill are also available for visitors."
The hope is to invite the public to participate and observe as we communicate with other operators all over the world for the duration of the event. There will also be interactive displays of antique CW equipment and information on Amateur Radio. If possible, we hope to even have the operators dressed to look (as closely as possible) to like the telegraph operators of long ago, adding another historic and publicly familiar facet to the event. Contacts will be referred to the CCARS website for more information. Later, QSL cards will be printed with pictures from the event and details of the contact.
